Rules and policies

Rules and policies are in place to make sure your child remains safe and well at school.

Visit the NSW Department of Education’s policy library for all current operational policies.

Our school uses the department's School Community Charter to ensure all of our communication is collaborative and respectful.

School Behaviour Support and Management Plan

Our Behaviour Support and Management Plan has been reviewed to align with best practices in student wellbeing and behaviour management. The plan continues to emphasise trauma-informed approaches, Choice Theory principles, and clear anti-bullying strategies to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

We take a proactive approach to behaviour management, reinforcing positive conduct through recognition and encouragement. This includes verbal praise, Outstanding Consistent Behaviour stickers, and Gorokan Gold awards. At the same time, we address inappropriate behaviours with respect and fairness, guided by Glasser’s Choice Theory and the Get Happier Project.

To support this initiative, we implement Reality Therapy principles using the Get Happier Open Roads and Roundabout framework, alongside our Student Behaviour Matrix. Teachers consistently apply the Classroom Behaviour Management Guide across all classrooms to ensure a fair and supportive learning environment.

Attendance and absences

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent and remain in school, employment or training until they turn 17.

For more information about compulsory school attendance, visit:

At Gorokan Public School 93.2% of students attended school on average each day. This was higher than the state and region averages.

To encourage 100% student attendance we implement a range of programs including: Kinder Go; acknowledging 100% attendance on a term and yearly basis, regular newsletter items, involvement of the Home School Liaison Officer in school activities, individual attendance plans to assist students to improve attendance, and monitoring attendance on a daily basis. Staff follow up non-attendance with phone calls and letters to encourage and reinforce the importance of regular attendance at school.

Student whole day and part day absences will be reported on each child's half yearly and yearly school reports.

School frameworks (school rules)

As well as following the department’s operational policies, we have developed frameworks for our students in line with our school’s values and commitments.
